Siteground hosting and why I recommend it for WordPress

If you are a regular reader of Active JR then you will notice this is not a normal fitness review being a Siteground hosting review. When I started website Active JR, I hosted Active JR with Godaddy and I ran into multiple problems with site speed and support and decided to look for a new hosting provider and this is when I came across Siteground hosting and just renewed Active JR’s hosting plan with them.

Web Hosting

So as you can see each hosting plan has key differences and you need to decide if what features you need. My personal advice is that the price difference between startup and GrowBig is so small, for the extra super caching, backups and priority support its worth the extra cash. But the big question is do I need to go for the GoGeek shared hosting plan and if you need on I will extra the key features below

Siteground hosting review – key hosting features explained

Monthly visitors

This is the number of hits your website can handle in a given month. This is not an exact science as other factors play a role in server resources and because you are using a shared server the resources are spread across multiple different clients. But the key thing here is if you are starting out then the startup plan could work for you, but if you are expecting growth to be fast then the GrowBig or GoGeek hosting plans from Siteground could be the choice.

Disk space

This is the amount of disk space you can use for your website, to give you some context this site users about 15GB of space and it’s been going for over 15 months. So unless you are going to be hosting your own videos on your website then either of the plans is more than enough.

Hosted websites

This is the number of websites you can host a single hosting plan. With the startup hosting plan you can only host one site, but with the others it is unlimited. My suggestion here is if you run or plan to run multiple blogs then go for the GrowBig or GoGeek hosting plans. But do remember that if the sites you plan to host are going to grow then you may need to host them on their own hosting plans.

Web Hosting

Cloudfire CDN

The best way to look at CDN is imagining your website is a newspaper and it your readership is based all over the world and you need to get it to newspaper distributors in these locations to make it faster for people to read your newspaper. Well Cloudfire CDN is a service provider by Siteground free to all hosting plans to place copies of your website in all of the locations to make it faster for people to access your website. I personally use this and it made a massive difference.

Siteground Super Cacher

The SuperCacher is developed by SiteGround exclusively for our customers. It increases the number of hits a site can handle and boosts the website loading speed. The SuperCacher includes 4 different caching options for maximum optimisation of your websites. This feature is so big that it would take an article to explain, but in short with startup plan you get basic features and with the GrowBig and GoGeek hosting plans you get all the levels. This is another feature I use on my website for speed

Daily backup

This is the number of backups created for your website daily and startup up hosting plan only creates 1 and the GrowBig and GoGeek hosting plans create 30 backups daIt is. It is important to take backups of your website in case of a change you make or hackers and you can restore, but please note with the startup hosting plan whilst Siteground make a back up of your site, they will charge you to restore it. However, with the GrowBig and GoGeek plans you get a backup restore tool and with the GoGeek you get a service where you can raise a support ticket and a support agent will manage it for you.

Web Hosting

PCI compliant servers

If you plan to host a website taking card payments then you need it to be PCcompliantnt. So for this option, you can only go with the GoGeek hosting plan from Siteground to get this feature.

GIT repository

Git is the industry standard for version control and source code management. On the GoGeek plans, you can link your account with a local installation of Git. SG-GIT makes creating a repository of your website. If you need this feature then its only available on the GoGeek Hosting plans

Staging wordpress with Siteground

Website staging is a feature on the Siteground GoGeek Hosting plan that allows you to take a copy of your website and place it into its own environment, in simple terms it creates a copy of your website so you can make and test changes before making them live so you don’t mess up your live website. I use this feature all the time to test out new ideas on my website and then if they work out after testing push them to my live site. This is a feature I would recommend to anyone who makes changes often to the themes and code, but its only available on siteground GoGeek hosting plan

Siteground hosting review – Website speed

As I said when I started this review I was hosting this website with Godaddy and the website speed was very bad and I was not reeling anyway near the traffic I am today. Just to give you an idea of how bad it got and how big my desire to leave Godaddy got, I actually moved this website to Siteground hosting still with 9 months of hosting remaining with GoDaddy without a refund.

So moving on to Siteground performance, overall I am happy with the performance with Siteground and I am hitting the monthly visits for the top plan and it’s still loading well. You can see from the GTmatrix report how well this website is scoring for speed and performance. Please note that I did have the CDN and caching plugins customised by an external developer with the support from Siteground tech support at the same time I had some custom work done to the site, but regardless of that setup, the caching and CDN is fairly straightforward.

Siteground hosting review – Tech support

This is one area I cannot rate Siteground hosting highly enough for as the service is amazing from them every time. Siteground give you the option to call them, raise a ticket or chat with an advisor by web chat and all of these services are support fast. Most times I contact siteground via web chat its answered within a couple of minutes and the team on hand are very Knowledgeable and when I raise a ticket I get a response within 10 minutes and comparing this to GoDaddy its like night and day base on my experience. I have had to use the tech support on 2 critical occasions, the first being when I had some theme problems in WordPress and I got an external developer to support me. He commented on how helpful Siteground was in helping him and even going above and beyond on some occasions with his requests. The 2nd time Active JR was hacked and whilst siteGround didn’t fix the problem (it was not in the support remit to do that) Siteground pointed me in the right direction to find the malicious code and I removed it.

So in summary, Siteground hosting support is really good and one of the reasons I have Renewed this year with them.

Which Siteground hosting plan should I choose

Which siteground hosting plan should I choose

So the biggest question on your lips maybe which Siteground hosting plan should I choose and my genuine advice would be to look at the features and decide which ones you are going to use. I personally would discount the Startup hosting plan and go straight to the GrowBig hosting plan just for the extra features for the very little cash difference. Then next choice, do you need the GoGeek hosting plan and the in my view if you are going to be running an online shop, wanting to make changes to the themes and code often or need GIT then choose this plan. The only other obvious consideration is the number of visitors and when I started this site I never thought I would be hitting the visitor ceiling in under 6 months and possibly looking to a cloud hosting platform from Siteground.

Siteground Hosting review conclusion

So to summerise my Siteground hosting review using WordPress, I cannot praise them enough for the website hosting performance, support and 1st year pricing. I would like to point out that Siteground is not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for and if you want cheap then your website will come across cheap. You also should take note that 2nd year pricing can be expensive with them if you don’t haggle with them to get the price down and I did that for my Renewal with them.
