How to install full TOPO contour maps on the Garmin Fenix 5 Plus and 5x

The Garmin Fenix 5x was announced back in January 2017 at CES and it promised mapping capabilities. So if you want far detailed maps then you have 2 options, the first being to buy topo contour maps from Garmin, but these are expensive. The 2nd option is to download Topo maps for the Fenix 5x from a third party OSM map provider. In this tutorial Active JR will tell you where to get Topo maps Fenix 5x and how install them on the device.

Topo Maps for the Fenix 5x details & cost

The stock maps for the Fenix 5x lack lots of details, however the maps via Talktoaster include details like forests, landmarks and for hikers contours on the maps. The maps for the Fenix 5x also come in TT 1:50K Look n Feel and standard maps. The TT 1:50K Look n Feel cost a small amount, but certainly a lot cheaper than the Topo maps from Garmin. You can also get a a free topo map Fenix 5x for the British Isles for download.

  1. Hello

I’m just wondering what your opinion is on the 5X as an upgrade to an Epix? I use my Epix for cycling, running and swimming and wear it for activity tracking all day. TIA

  2. I’ve installed some third party ski resort maps ( onto my 5+, if I go into the “Map” app > settings > Configure Maps, i can turn off the stock maps and turn on the ski map. If i go back out of settings I can see ski resort map fine. However, if I then go into a sport mode (eg. “ski” activity tracking), when i’m in there i just get the stock map again, there’s no option to pick which maps are enabled from there.

It looks like i can either have 3rd party maps, or activity tracking, but not both at the same time. Have you found any way around this?

  3. hi,
I bought my garmin Fenix 5x when I was home in Scotland but I live in Canada now, how do I get the maps onto the watch? I downloaded them on the garmin Explore app, but cant see them on my watch.
