The Belkin WeMo Insight switch is part of the WeMo family of smart home products that you can use to control devices in your connected home and whilst Belkin call the product a WeMo insight switch in the UK, its called the WeMo Insight plug in the US and I can’t help to think it should have been called the same for the UK.
Belkin advises using the WeMo Insight switch with devices like TV’s’ washing machines and lights to control usage and monitor power consolation, but being honest you can use the insight switch with a variety of devices. so when I carried out the WeMo insight switch review, I used it with an electric fire and a number of computers to get a good range over my month-long review.

Wemo Insight Switch Review – Design
- Standard 3 pin UK plug type – US version also available
- Wifi status display on the top of the plug
- Available in white only
The UK version of the WeMo Insight switch is pretty bulky when you compare it the US version and when you add the device you want to plug in, you need around 3 inches clearance if you decide to put it behind furniture. You also may have trouble installing the WeMo Insight switch with sockets that are on a worktop with little clearance at the bottom as the plug needs about 1-inch clearance.
Belkin has made the plug out of hard plastic which feels very strong. The WeMO insight switch comes with 3 prong UK plug as standard, however, you can get the US compatible plug. The WeMo Plug only features one button and this is used if you need to reset the device and it also features a WIFI indication light to let you know if the plug has a connection.
Overall I like the build quality of the WeMo Insight plug, but as I have already mentioned its a little bulky and it only comes in white, so if you are looking to blend this in with stainless sockets then you are out of luck.
Wemo Insight Switch review – Setup
- WeMo App available for iOS & Android
- Setup was a little fiddly
- Easy to follow instructions
As with most smart home devices that connect to your wifi, you need to first connect to the device and this is done by searching for the WeMo insight plug and then connected to it. Once you have made that connection you have the option of renaming the Insight plug to something you remember and then you follow the remainder of the setup.
Setting up the WeMo insight plug was pretty tricky and actually took 4 attempts to get it connected to my Wifi network using my iPhone X. The Setup process just kept on getting stuck on the final stage of the pairing process when connecting to my home Wifi and each time I needed to reset the WeMo insight switch via the reset button, however, once I did a reset of the router and iPhone X it did connect on the 5th attempt.
At the end of the setup process, I was prompted to do a firmware update, which I did and this took around 5 minutes and once this was completed the setup process was completed with the WeMo Insight switch ready to use.
One of the big features of the Belkin WeMo insight switch is the energy monitoring and in order to ensure the energy consumption calculations are correct, you need to set them up first in the app. Entering your electricity tariff information is not called out in the app as a first step action, however carrying out this action is simple and you will just need your energy bill to get your cost per kWh.
Wemo Insight plug review – using the plug and app
- Energy monitoring built-in
- Simple app and easy to use
- Easy to move around the home
When I was using the WeMo insight switch in my home for the month review, I used it in a variety of rooms using different electrical devices ranging from electrical fires, Media servers and lamps to get a view of how you could use this device in the home. I found using the app with the Insight plug was very easy to both understand and use.
Turning the WeMo Insight switch on and off is very easy within the app by pressing the on/off button and the status of the Insight plug is indicated by a amber or green dot to show if its on or off. If you click on a green downward arrow, this is where you get the energy insight and other bits of useful information like time on, time on since, energy consultation and the monthly estimated cost. I found using the device at first will give you a very high monthly cost and in the screenshot below its plugged into my electrical fireplace, however, after a couple of days, it gave a lower reading that was more in line with what the fire did consume
Smart home integration
The WeMo insight plus is comparable with Alexa, IFTTT and nest and you can use these smart assistant services to turn the Insight switch on and off or in the case of IFTTT, you can also link it with other smart home devices to create home automation. The big name in smart assistants, Google Home is not currently supported by the WeMo insight plug and no word on when this is coming. However, if you are a user of Apple HomeKit then in the US you can buy a WeMo bridge right now to add HomeKit support and in the UK its coming later this year.
The WeMo Insight switch comes with built-in automation allowing you to set “rules” of when to trigger the device to carry out something. So, for instance, you can set a schedule for the WeMo insight switch to turn on and off at certain times which is useful if its used in Childs bedroom to control TV usage. You can also set rules based on the motion when paired with the WeMo motion sensor.

Will the WeMo insight plug save me money on energy?
The big question that some people will ask is Will the WeMo insight plug save me money on energy? I personally think it will take you a few years to get your money back on energy bill savings unless you leave devices like TV’s, electrical heaters or irons on all the time. You need to buy a few of these devices to make a big impact and given the price of them to start you may be best of just changing all the light bulbs in the home to LED if you are looking to save money on energy.
Should I buy the Belkin WeMo Insight Switch?
The WeMo insight plug is a good entry into the smart home and home automation and is relatively inexpensive. The Belkin WeMo Insight Switch is perfect if you’re concerned about power-hungry electrical devices such as TV’s or irons being left on in your home and you want to monitor usage and have peace of mind to be check if you left something on.
